In Restrained, the human psyche is portrayed as both performer and prisoner. The figure, perched on two stilts with limbs hanging limp, wears a vibrant jester’s cap. Once a symbol of joy and foolishness, it now serves as a crown of entrapment. Each tentacle of the cap is tethered to crimson hands, pulling in opposing directions. These hands do not hold him physically but psychologically, reflecting how others’ expectations, opinions, and societal norms shape and fragment our identity.
The posture suggests exhaustion alongside endurance, the kind that grows from constant emotional masking. The viewer is left questioning what part of this man is real and what part is performance. In the surreal language of New Consciousness, Restrained invites reflection on how emotional autonomy becomes distorted by invisible scripts we never chose to follow.
